Growing vegetables at home is one way to help alleviate hunger and food insecurity. RCAM has a community garden behind its senior shelter allowing us to grow food and make it available free of charge to our neighbors who do not have their own gardens. We also help families garden at their own home. One of the ways we fund this program is through an annual SeedMoney campaign.
With a successful SeedMoney campaign, RCAM will have the financial resources it needs to continue to meet an anticipated increase in demand as more of our food insecure families discover our gardening program and its resources. Funds will go toward the purchase of seeds and seedlings and for materials to build raised beds. Additional funds will allow us to increase the number of families we can enroll and provide more classes for our home gardeners. So far, we have held classes on seed saving, container gardening, and canning.
Rural Community Action Ministry (RCAM) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that has, since 1970, worked to address homelessness and hunger in our 14-town service area in rural Maine. RCAM addresses rural hunger by helping rural families learn to garden so they can access vegetables year-round.
